Spring Executive Director Notes

Executive Director Jorge Quiñones
Every day I’m in awe of the wonderful programs that our non-profit West Houston agencies provide for our community. The thousands of adults, children, volunteers, students, and visitors that come through our doors is staggering. (Oh, and people are really enjoying the updated kitchen and bathrooms that we were able to renovate because of your year end giving!)
The Center has also been selected to be one of the non-profits in Houston to be honored at the Women’s Contractor Association Casino Night & Fashion Show on May 2. If you’d like tickets, please visit this registration link.
Our West Houston Non-Profit Organizations in the Spotlight
Palmer Drug Abuse Program Houston
Hailey Clay, LCDC-1 (Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor with Palmer Drug Abuse Program) shared her journey of recovery at Casino Night. We are very thankful for the many young lives and families that have found hope and healing through their program. Many who heard her presentation said that now they understood what the Center was all about.
“PDAP not only provides guidance on how to live a healthy and sober lifestyle, but it also creates an alternative peer group for PDAP members, thus giving them a safe & secure environment to implement change & build lifelong friendships.”
PDAP hosts many hangouts, service projects, and meetings at the Center on a weekly basis. We are glad to be here for them!
FamilyPoint Resources – Investing in Houston’s Children
FamilyPoint Resources hosted one Great Day of Spring Camps last month. Groups of students from Stratford High School volunteered and the elementary students were able to connect with high school students and learn about opportunities awaiting them in high school. “This year the Baseball team, Theatre group, Anime Club, and Spartanaires put on a GREAT day of camp! Campers rotated through each group to learn skills, build new friendships, and had lots fun.”
YoungLife Providing Relationship & Faith Building Communities in Houston
YoungLife meets regularly at the Center providing safe activities for young teens in our community building relationships, skill-building activities, and a foundation of faith. With seven active gangs in the Sherwood area, we are glad to be here for them!
Casino Night Was a Great Success!
We made new friends of the Center and attendees were blessed to hear Hailey Clay, LCDC-1, with PDAP share her journey of recovery. Thank you for helping spread the word! With combined event registrations, silent auction, event purchases, and donations, we raised over $18,000 after expenses. This goes a long way to keep our Center in tip top shape for our non-profit community partners.
A Special Thank You to Volunteers!
Our annual fundraising events wouldn’t be quite as successful without the dedication of our volunteers. We had thirteen volunteers at Casino Night, pitching and helping wherever was needed. There most important task was taking care of our guests, taking “orders” at their tables for refreshments, and poker and casino chip rebuys. Thank you volunteers for your support of the Center with your time, talent, and smiles!
